Ancestors

Thank you
for your strength
For your fortitude-
your knack for
survival.

You are sturdy and
made me
sturdy.

Your bones
do not break,
bend to the weight
of this world.

Do not shatter
but sing.

I am
resilient
because of your
pain.

Bone of your bone,
flesh of your
flesh.

I rise
from the ashes
of your strife.

Your minds,
focused on
the task at hand.
Present, able bodied,
joyful.

You didn’t fear
the future,
you rarely thought of it.

You didn’t need
its false guarantees
you knew
there were none.

You accepted
life’s bargain
and put your
full weight
behind it.
